I read something very scary today. No, the Kardashian's are not coming out with yet another show (or, at least I hope not). No, this is much, much worse. Type II diabetes sufferers are 2-3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's. Consider this: there are 32MM people in the US with diabetes, the vast majority of whom have Type II, and that rate is rapidly increasing due to our ever-expanding national waistline. Add to that aging baby boomers, and you've got a recipe for disaster.
The Guardian's article makes the case that Alzeheimer's could well be Type III diabetes, and that it may well be the single worst side effect of a junk food rich diet. Wow, as if I needed another reason to get back on the healthy eating wagon!
We all know high sugar, high fat diets aren't good for us, but the data is really stacking up to show that it's not just about vanity. Clearly, I love tasty food, and I certainly eat my fair share of rich foods. But more than ever, I will be continuing my eternal struggle to balance my adventurous tastes with my desire to be healthy for long to come!
