Austrian Christmas Markets: A Magical Experience Your Kids Will Love

Last Updated on January 11, 2026 by Lindsey

Austria at Christmas feels straight out of a snow globe. Picture twinkling lights strung across historic squares, steaming mugs of hot chocolate (or mulled wine for the adults), and stalls overflowing with handmade ornaments and sweet treats. Weโ€™ve taken our kids to the Austrian Christmas markets, and I can confirm theyโ€™re just as magical as youโ€™d hope. Yes, itโ€™s cold. Yes, itโ€™s crowded. But seeing your childโ€™s face light up under a giant Christmas tree or while nibbling local sweets makes it all worth it.

In this guide, Iโ€™ll cover the best Christmas markets in Austria, with a spotlight on the Vienna Christmas markets (because they really do steal the show). Iโ€™ll also share practical tips for visiting with kids, from how to stay warm to which markets offer the most family-friendly extras. And if youโ€™re wondering about logistics, like when the Vienna Christmas markets start and close in 2025, or which Austrian markets are best for families, youโ€™ll find those details here too.

If you’re still unsure which country you want to visit Christmas markets in, start with our full guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe.

Quick Guide to Austriaโ€™s Christmas Markets (2025 Dates + Basics)

Austria at Christmas is a wonderlandโ€”historic squares lit with twinkling lights, the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air, and markets everywhere you turn. Planning your trip with kids in mind means knowing when the markets open, how long they run, and which cities offer the best experience for families.

When the Markets Open

Most of Viennaโ€™s Christmas markets kick off in mid-November. For 2025, expect the main markets like Rathausplatz to open around November 14โ€“15. Smaller neighborhood markets often start around the same time, and some continue past Christmas into early January with New Yearโ€™s markets.

Closing Dates and Hours

Markets generally close by December 23 or 24, though a few extend until the first week of January. Most open daily from 10 AM to 9 or 10 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore. Smaller markets may close earlier in the evening, so plan accordingly if youโ€™re visiting with kids.

Best Time to Visit

We love to visit European Christmas markets during Thanksgiving break because crowds are smaller and weather is better. For families, weekdays and mornings are ideal to avoid the heaviest crowds. But I prefer the twinkling lights of evening hours I.f youโ€™re visiting multiple cities, Vienna and Salzburg are especially charming in the evenings when the lights are on, but donโ€™t wait too longโ€”the markets can get packed with tourists after school hours and on weekends.

Austrian Christmas Markets

Thereโ€™s something undeniably magical about visiting Austria during the holidays. Twinkling lights, steaming mugs of mulled wine, and stalls piled high with ornaments and treatsโ€”Austriaโ€™s Christmas markets are the stuff of storybooks. And if youโ€™re visiting with kids, youโ€™ll find plenty of family-friendly fun mixed in with all that festive charm.

We spent several days exploring Christmas markets in Vienna and Salzburg, and each one had its own personality. Some wowed us with their beauty, others with their food, and a few felt a little too chaotic to fully enjoy with little ones. Hereโ€™s our honest take, plus tips to help you plan your own Austrian Christmas market adventure.

Vienna Christmas Markets

Vienna is one of Europeโ€™s most famous holiday destinations, and it doesnโ€™t disappoint. Markets pop up all over the city, from tiny neighborhood fairs to the grand, glittering square at Rathausplatz. Make it easy with this Christmas market tour that visits 4 markets in one night!

Rathausplatz Christmas Market

This is Viennaโ€™s most iconic market, set against the backdrop of City Hall. Itโ€™s huge, dazzling, and full of energy. But honestly? I prefer the smaller ones. The lights and decorations were gorgeous, but the crowds made it overwhelming, especially with kids in tow. If you do go, try to visit right when it opens or on a weekday morning to avoid the crush.

Karlsplatz Christmas Market

This one charmed us completely. Instead of big commercial stalls, youโ€™ll find a focus on handmade crafts and artisan goods. My kids loved running around the open square, and the food was a hitโ€”think roasted chestnuts and fluffy fried dough. It felt cozy, approachable, and much more relaxed than Rathausplatz.

Schรถnbrunn Palace Christmas Market

Set in front of the glowing yellow Schonbrunn Palace., this market is pure holiday magic. Located in the courtyard outside the palace, this market had perhaps the most elegant crafts of any in Vienna, including several pig-themed ones for my porcine-obsessed 9-year-old. Don’t miss the booth with activities for kids. My daughters loved the scavenger hunt, and I loved having a moment to sip my punch in peace.

We also combined our visit with a tour of both the kids’ museum and the main palace, which was a hit with my daughters. They loved dressing up in costumes at the kids’ museum, while I enjoyed learning more about Austria’s most famous emperor, Franz Ferdinand, and his fascinating wife, Sisi. We even watched Netflix’s The Empress before the trip to better understand their lives. If you want to learn more about Sisi, you can also visit the small but fascinating Sisi Museum in the Hofburg complex to learn more about her glamorous but sad life

Parent tip: Dress warmly and plan breaks indoors for hot drinks and snacks. Even a short pause can make a busy market visit much more enjoyable
with kids.

Smaller Markets Around Vienna

Vienna is dotted with smaller neighborhood markets, many of which feel more local and authentic. We stumbled upon a few while wandering and loved how low-key they were. Theyโ€™re worth seeking out if you want a quieter experience and donโ€™t mind skipping the big-name spots.

What to Eat at Viennaโ€™s Christmas Markets

Viennaโ€™s Christmas markets are a feast for the senses, and the food is no exception. Classic treats include kartoffelpuffer (crispy potato pancakes), kaiserschmarrn (fluffy torn pancakes with plum compote), and bratwurst sausages fresh off the grill. For little ones, sweet options like gingerbread hearts, roasted chestnuts, and candied almonds are always a hit. Adults can enjoy warming up with a cup of glรผhwein or a non-alcoholic Kinderpunsch, often served in festive collectible mugsโ€”a fun keepsake from your visit. Donโ€™t forget to try some of the marketโ€™s local pastries or a slice of sachertorte for a truly Viennese treat. Get the scoop on all our favorite holiday beverages.

There’s plenty to eat outside of the markets as well. Be sure to indulge in some of Vienna’s famous coffee salons. We had breakfast at Cafe Central and enjoyed the famous sacchertorte at Cafe Demel. Dinner was a highlight, with exceptional meals at Glacis Beisl (where we feasted on wiener schnitzel and grammel dumplings) and Lugeck, where we enjoyed rye sourdough bread with caramelized creamy butter and delicious Viennese fried chicken. Vienna is a city of immigrants, so we also had a hearty Israeli lunch at Neni am Wasser (cash only).

Christmas Markets Beyond Vienna

Salzburg Christmas Markets

After a few days in Vienna, we took the train to Salzburg. The main Christkindlmarkt by the cathedral felt extra atmosphericโ€”even with dreary weather. Twinkling lights, carolers, and that Old Town setting made it memorable. I warmed up with a lumumba (boozy hot chocolate), which hit the spot.

We also did the the Sound of Music bus tour; it was a fun add-on for fans. I didn’t love our visit to the Fortress Hohensalzburg after hours on a rainy night. The funicular was enjoyable and the view pretty, but it wasnโ€™t worth the cost for us.

Make it easy and consider a Christmas market tour that takes you from Vienna to Salzburg.

Stay: Imlauer Hotel Pitter

Family notes: Music everywhere, easy walking, festive without being overwhelming.

Innsbruck Christmas Markets

If youโ€™re expanding your trip, Innsbruck is a good contender. Its Old Town sits beneath mountain peaks, and the historic center is especially pretty at night. Travelers often pair market time with mountain views via the cable car. Itโ€™s a solid option if you want city markets plus alpine scenery.

Stay: Hotel Mondschein

Family notes: Compact center, dramatic views, easy to mix light sightseeing with market browsing.

Graz Christmas Markets

Graz brings a smaller-city feel and a storybook Old Town. Itโ€™s known for creative displays and a charming atmosphere that works well for slower-paced exploring. If you prefer fewer crowds and a cozy vibe, itโ€™s worth considering.

Family notes: Walkable, pretty squares, relaxed tempo.

Hallstatt at Christmas

Hallstatt is straight out of a fairy tale, and during the holiday season, it becomes even more magical. The lakeside village is draped in twinkling lights, with charming small stalls selling local crafts and seasonal treats. Its cozy atmosphere makes it perfect for a quiet stroll with kids, and the snow-dusted mountains and reflections on the lake provide postcard-worthy views at every turn. Hallstatt is ideal as a day trip from Salzburg or Vienna if you want a taste of Austriaโ€™s storybook charm beyond the big city markets. Note, it’s Christmas market is just one day only – December 8, but it’s plenty charming even without a market.

⭐Small-Group Christmas Day Trip to Hallstatt from Vienna

Smaller Gems: Linz, Seefeld, Rattenberg

Short on time but curious beyond the big names? These smaller spots can deliver that intimate, local feelโ€”think compact squares, regional treats, and low-key browsing. They make nice add-ons if youโ€™re already nearby or road-tripping.

Tips for Visiting Austrian Christmas Markets with Kids

  1. Go early in the day. Crowds build fast, especially at the big-name markets.
  2. Bundle up. December in Austria is cold! Bring layers, hats, gloves, and scarves.
  3. Snacks are your friend. Luckily, food stalls are everywhereโ€”pretzels, sausages, gingerbread, and hot chocolate will keep kids happy.
  4. Pick your battles. Donโ€™t try to see every market. Choose a few highlights and leave time to wander at a slower pace.
  5. Bring cash. Many vendors donโ€™t take cards.

Final Thoughts

Austriaโ€™s Christmas markets are magical no matter which city you visit, but not all of them are equally kid-friendly. For families, Iโ€™d skip Rathausplatz unless you can go during off-hours, and instead focus on Karlsplatz, Schรถnbrunn, and Salzburgโ€™s Cathedral Square. Smaller neighborhood markets also turned out to be some of our favoritesโ€”they may not have the flash, but they do have heart.

Whether youโ€™re sipping glรผhwein, shopping for ornaments, or watching your kids chase snowflakes, Austria at Christmas is an experience youโ€™ll never forget.
