Join us on a memorable family journey to the Catskills in the fall, a destination that promises picturesque landscapes, kid-friendly fun, and delectable dining experiences.
Our adventure begins with the perfect home base – an enchanting A-frame Airbnb nestled in the heart of Roscoe. Surrounded by towering trees dressed in their autumn best, this cozy retreat set the stage for our Catskills escapade.
No Shortage of Family Fun in the Catskills in the Fall
The Catskills offers year-round fun for the whole family. Pro tip: This is a weekend destination in the fall, so restaurant options are sparse Monday- Wednesday. So, you should consider eating at home if your trip has you there mid-week.
1. Buckbrook Alpacas: Fuzzy Encounters
Buckbrook Alpacas is a heartwarming experience for the whole family. Pay for a tour, and get up close and personal with these gentle creatures and plus a few other barnyard friends. My pig-crazy daughter was in hog heaven (see what I did there?!).
2. Wicklow Orchards: Cider Sipping
Catskills in the fall wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Wicklow Orchards. Sip on crisp, locally crafted cider as you soak in the autumn ambiance.
3. Brooklyn Cider House: Apple Picking and More
Why stop at just one cidery? For the quintessential fall experience, head to Brooklyn Cider House. Not only can you drink cider here, but you can also pick apples. Pro tip: This place was crowded on the weekend, so plan to wait for your drinks and food.
4. Callicoon Farmer’s Market: Sunday Delights
On a Sunday, take advantage of the Callicoon Farmer’s Market. Stroll through the bustling market and discover artisanal goods, fresh produce, and local crafts. My daughter purchased her adorable pig knit hat pictured above there. There is a movie theater in Callicoon that shows old movies and has fantastic popcorn. Unfortunately, it wasn’t showing a kid-friendly film while we were there, so we didn’t get to check it out.
5. Local Stores: Hidden Treasures
Exploring local stores is an adventure in itself. From handmade jewelry to antique finds, these shops offer unique souvenirs that will forever remind you of your Catskills journey. I highly recommend a stop at Spruce Home Goods.
Hiking and Scenic Drives to enjoy in the Catskills in the Fall
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Catskills offer a plethora of options. Hike along the serene Alder Lake, embark on a scenic drive through the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway, or take a leisurely walk along the Little Pond Loop Trail. The Catskills in the fall are a paradise for nature lovers. Alder Lake and Little Pond Loop were both easy for our kids to manage and offered truly stunning foliage. If you only have time for one hike, choose Alder Lake.
In addition, this area is filled with covered bridges, so check out beauties like Springtown Bridge in New Paltz (seen in A Quiet Place!)
Where to eat in the Catskills in the fall
Now, let’s dive into the culinary delights that awaited us in the Catskills.
1. Conover Club: A Local Hangout
This local hangout was a perfect option for brunch. While there, I enjoyed a hearty carnitas hash and the kids tucked into light, fluffy pancakes.
2. Northern Farmhouse Pasta: Handcrafted Perfection
This low-key Italian spot was close to our Airbnb and has quality pasta and friendly service. It’s popular, so make a reservation.
3. Ollie’s Pizza: A Slice of Heaven
Who can resist the allure of a delicious pizza? Ollie’s Pizza serves up some of the best pies in the Catskills. With a variety of toppings and crispy crusts, it’s the perfect place to refuel after a day of exploration.
4. Kaatskeller: A Hidden Gem
Who says you can only have pizza once on a trip? We enjoyed our wood-fired pizzas and beers on Kaatskeller’s large patio.
5. Neversink General Store: Local Flavor
Neversink General Store serves up surprisingly upscale sandwiches, considering it’s in a gas station. It was a perfect option for picking up takeout on the way back from our scenic drive through Kerhonkson. The chicken parm is gigantic and very filling.
6. The Junction: A Culinary Crossroads
The Junction, a cozy and hip eatery, was one of our favorites. It’s packed with everything from fishermen still in their outdoor gear to starry-eyed hipsters on a date. Start with fried saltines with smoked trout spread, and save room for a burger. Ask about their daily frozen drink specials – I love a frozen beverage any time of year! Be prepared to wait for a table by poking around at one of the nearby shops.
The Catskills in the Fall – a New Annual Tradition?
Our family visit to the Catskills in the fall was nothing short of magical. From the captivating colors of the foliage to exploring the region’s many restaurants and cideries, it was a trip we can’t wait to repeat.
