Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have everything from pancake houses to Southern comfort food. Think biscuits, BBQ, and all the carbs your hiking legs deserve.
Where to Stay:
Cabins with mountain views are the move. Gatlinburg is closest to park entrances, but Pigeon Forge has loads of family-friendly resorts with pools, arcades, and room to spread out.
Acadia National Park: A Breathtaking Fall Break for Families
If your family loves crisp mountain air, golden leaves, and rugged coastlines, Acadia National Park in Maine is a fall break dream. By October, the park’s sugar maples, birches, and aspens turn fiery shades of red, gold, and orange—perfect for scenic drives along the Park Loop Road or leaf-peeping hikes.

In Tuscany, you’ll find harvest festivals, farmhouse stays, and hilltop towns that look straight out of a storybook. Head to Rome for ancient ruins, piazzas packed with gelato-fueled energy, and just enough culture to feel educational without being boring. Plus, it’s still warm enough in October to dine outside and let kids run free in the city’s many open-air spaces. Note there’s no such thing as shoulder season anymore in Italy, and you can expect large crowds even in the fall.

Paris in the Fall

Costa Rica: A Tropical Shoulder Season Win
For families craving warm weather and wild adventure, Costa Rica delivers in the fall—minus the peak season price tag. While it’s still rainy in some parts of the country, areas like the Pacific coast begin drying out by late October. That means fewer crowds, lush scenery, and plenty of wildlife spotting, ziplining, and beach time. I adore Costa Rica, but personally prefer it at other times of year.

Riviera Maya, Mexico (Including Xcaret)
Fall is a sweet spot for visiting the Riviera Maya, with warm temps, thinner crowds, and the chance to explore cultural attractions like Xcaret Park without the summer frenzy. Families can mix beach time with snorkeling, river tubing, or swimming in cenotes, plus experience Day of the Dead celebrations if visiting in late October or early November. I don’t have the nerves for hurricane season travel to Mexico, so this isn’t my personal favorite option for Xcaret, but it’s a great time if you want a better deal.

Iceland: Cool, Wild, and Surprisingly Doable
If your family likes a little adventure, Iceland in the fall can be epic. I personally prefer summer in Iceland because I want maximum sunlight, but it’s a great option if you want ot catch the Northern Lights before it’s freezing. Plus, tourist spots are less packed, and it’s still possible to drive the Golden Circle without snow tires. Think waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, and volcanic landscapes—all in one trip. It’s best for families with older kids who are up for a bit of exploring and a lot of “whoa” moments.
