London was the first international trip we took our girls on, and it was a perfect first travel experience. Step into the pages of history in London, where centuries-old landmarks blend seamlessly with modern attractions. Explore the Tower of London, watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and take a spin on the London Eye for panoramic views of the city.
Stroll through one of the city’s many beautiful parks or charming neighborhoods like Notting Hill. Feeling tired? Tour the city on the hop–on, hop-off double–decker bus. Undoubtedly, my kids’ favorite experience was indulging in giant platters of sweets at high tea like the one at The Lane or The Ampersand.

DoubleTree Hilton Kensington: We stayed here on our recent visit and loved the spacious two-story duplex family suite, which offered plenty of room to spread out. Don’t Miss: Don’t miss the chance to indulge in a candy-fueled high tea at the Chesterfield Mayfair. My kids loved it, especially the part where you get a bag of candy at the end! Then take a Harry Potter-themed walking tour—magic meets royal tradition. We took this exact Harry Potter tour. My kids enjoyed seeing movie locations and showing off their vast knowledge of Potter trivia!
Copenhagen: Scandinavian Sunshine and Waterfront Wonders
Experience the Scandinavian sophistication and fairy-tale charm of Copenhagen, Denmark’s vibrant capital. Not all American kids will love typical Danish food (herring, anyone?). Fortunately, everyone can enjoy Danish delicacies like smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and fluffy æbleskiver (pancake balls).
f you head there in winter as we did, you can explore the charming Christmas markets and line-free rides at Tivoli Gardens. However, I’ve also been in January, and I do not recommend winter once the holidays are over. We overslept one day, and the sun had already set! Albania offers sunny beaches without the high price tag. Iceland keeps things cool with waterfalls and hot springs. Alternatively, Slovenia is ideal for hiking and outdoor adventure without big crowds.
Tuscany, Munich, and Paris shine in the fall. Fall is my favorite time of year to travel, and our family has enjoyed each of these destinations in October and November. During autumn you can enjoy vineyard harvests in Tuscany, family-friendly Oktoberfest fun in Munich, and smaller crowds at Paris museums and bakeries. In late November, Christmas markets open, too, and that’s a great time to get into the holiday spirit in Munich and Vienna.
Vienna, Salzburg, and Lapland (Finland) are magical in winter. Vienna and Salzburg have festive Christmas markets, horse-drawn carriages, and warm cafés. Lapland takes it up a notch with reindeer rides, snowy adventures, and a visit to “Santa’s village.”
