As a mom who has visited the region with my kids, I can say it’s one of our favorite fall foliage vacations. From apple picking and scenic hikes to quirky festivals and cozy cider mills, the Catskills pack in everything you want for an autumn getaway with children. In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do with kids in the Catskills during fall, based on first-hand experiences and insider tips to help you plan a trip that’s as fun as it is memorable.
The Catskills in fall are known for spectacular foliage, family-friendly farms, scenic drives, and outdoor adventures. It’s one of the best times to visit with kids, thanks to cooler weather and seasonal activities.

Our adventure begins with the perfect home base – an enchanting A-frame Airbnb nestled in the heart of Roscoe. Surrounded by towering trees dressed in their autumn best, this cozy retreat set the stage for our Catskills escapade.

The Catskills offer year-round fun for the whole family. Pro tip: This is a weekend destination in the fall, so restaurant options are limited Mondays through Wednesdays. So, you should consider eating at home if your trip has you there mid-week.

Now let’s dive into all the details—including insider tips from my own family trips—for planning the perfect Catskills in fall getaway.
1. Buckbrook Alpacas: Fuzzy Encounters

Buckbrook Alpacas is a heartwarming experience for the whole family. Pay for a tour, and get up close and personal with these gentle creatures plus a few other barnyard friends. My pig-crazy daughter was in hog heaven (see what I did there?!).
2. Wicklow Orchards: Cider Sipping
The Catskills in the fall wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Wicklow Orchards. Sip on crisp, locally crafted cider as you soak in the autumn ambiance.
3. Brooklyn Cider House: Apple Picking and More

Why stop at just one cidery? For the quintessential fall experience, head to Brooklyn Cider House. Not only can you drink cider here, but you can also pick apples. Pro tip: This place was crowded on the weekend, so plan to wait for your drinks and food.
4. Callicoon Farmer’s Market: Sunday Delights
On a Sunday, take advantage of the Callicoon Farmer’s Market. Stroll through the bustling market and discover artisanal goods, fresh produce, and local crafts. My daughter purchased her adorable pig knit hat pictured above there. There is a movie theater in Callicoon that shows old movies and has fantastic popcorn. Unfortunately, it wasn’t showing a kid-friendly film while we were there, so we didn’t get to check it out.
5. Fall Festivals & Events
Nothing says autumn in the Catskills like a good old-fashioned fall festival. Throughout September and October, the region comes alive with Oktoberfests, harvest fairs, and family-friendly celebrations.
At Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest, you’ll find three weekends of German-inspired fun—live music, hearty food, vendors, and even keg-rolling contests (parents can cheer while kids laugh at the antics). The Belleayre Mountain Fall Festival offers gondola rides with breathtaking foliage views alongside craft beer tastings, a fair-style craft market, and plenty of kid-approved activities like pumpkin decorating.
For something more laid-back, head to the Bethel Woods Harvest Festival, where local farmers and artisans set up shop on the historic Woodstock grounds with live music and delicious food.
Smaller events like the Roscoe Beer Co. Oktoberfest and Cunningham Family Farms in Swan Lake (with a corn maze, hayrides, and pick-your-own pumpkins) round out the season. Whether you’re there for the food, music, or just soaking up the fall atmosphere, these festivals guarantee plenty of family memories.
6. Go Leaf Peeping on a Scenic Drive
Sometimes the best way to soak in the Catskills’ famous foliage is from the comfort of your car. Routes like Route 28 or the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway offer winding roads lined with blazing reds, oranges, and yellows. Make it fun for kids by turning it into a “leaf-spotting game” (who can find the brightest red tree first?).
12. Visit a Local Cider Mill or Brewery with Family-Friendly Spaces
The Catskills are full of craft cideries and breweries that welcome families. Westwind Orchard in Accord, for example, serves wood-fired pizza along with their cider, and kids can roam the orchard. Parents get to sip while kids play—it’s a win-win.
13. Try a Covered Bridge Walk
Step back in time with a visit to one of the Catskills’ historic covered bridges. Bridges like the Beaverkill Covered Bridge or Halls Mills Bridge are especially beautiful in the fall when surrounded by fiery foliage. Kids love exploring these quaint landmarks, and they’re usually near picnic-worthy spots.
14. Go Horseback Riding Through the Foliage
My family always enjoys horseback riding when we visit a scenic location. Several stables in the Catskills, like Mountain Brook Farm or Rolling Stone Ranch in Bethel, offer guided trail rides. Older kids can ride on their own, while younger ones can sometimes do pony rides. Riding through the colorful woods is a magical way to experience autumn.
15. Visit a Historic Village or Museum
For a mix of fun and learning, check out Hanford Mills Museum, which hosts fall festivals with cider pressing and hands-on crafts, or Roxbury’s Historic Kirkside Park for a picnic surrounded by history. These destinations make history come alive for kids and add variety to your trip.
Hiking and Scenic Drives to enjoy in the Catskills in the Fall

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Catskills offer a plethora of options. Hike along the serene Alder Lake, embark on a scenic drive through the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway, or take a leisurely walk along the Little Pond Loop Trail. The Catskills in the fall are a paradise for nature lovers. Alder Lake and Little Pond Loop were both easy for our kids to manage and offered truly stunning foliage. If you only have time for one hike, choose Alder Lake.
In addition, this area is filled with covered bridges, so check out beauties like Springtown Bridge in New Paltz (seen in A Quiet Place!)
